As a Nepali, who doesn’t love Momo? It is the most popular and favorite food in Nepal, and I am no exception.

I absolutely love Momo in any form – steamed, fried, sadeko Momo – you name it!

But as much as I enjoy the classic steamed variety, sometimes you need a little extra kick.

That’s where chili momo comes in. Also known as C. momo, it is a personal favorite of mine.

The good part is that preparing chili momo is simple and only takes about 30 minutes from start to finish.

Here is my simple and easy recipe for chili momo if you want to switch things up from the usual steamed version.

INGREDIENTS - momo chili recipe

Momo: Pre-cooked Momo is needed for this recipe. I usually use my leftover Momo or frozen momo for this recipe. You can use any veg or meat-based Momo (chicken or pork) for this recipe.

Here is a recipe for chicken momo and soy chunks recipe.

Seasoning: Dark soy sauce, tomato ketchup, black pepper, salt, and spicy sauce(optional).

Spices: Red chili powder

Herbs: Spring onion or cilantro for garnishing.

Oil: Olive oil or any cooking oil.

Vegetables: Onion, bell pepper, and green chili. I am using a combination of red and green bell peppers but feel free to use both or either of them. Chop the bell pepper and onion into medium diced.

#1. Heat oil in a pan. Once hot, add pre-cooked momos. Fry until lightly browned, then remove from pan and set aside.

#2. In the same pan, add more oil. Sauté chopped green chilies for a minute. Then add onions and sauté for another minute.

#3. Add bell peppers and combine well. Saute for a few minutes. Then add ginger and garlic paste along with red chili powder. Mix thoroughly and cook for a few minutes.

#4. Next, add all the sauce (soy sauce, tomato ketchup, and spicy sauce) and black pepper to the pan. Combine everything well, then add water. Let it simmer for 3-5 minutes until the sauce thickens further.

#5. Once the sauce thickens, add the fried momos and combine with the sauce. Let it cook for the next few minutes until momo is coated with the sauce.

#6. Once cooked, garnish it with a spring onion or cilantro. Season with salt if needed, and serve the Momo hot.

Note: Soy sauce already has salt, so be careful when adding more salt.

Serving Suggestions

  • You can serve chili momo as a main meal with a cold drink like lassi or any cold beverages.
  • Also you can serve it as an appetizer as well.
